LINE

Line -

- represents a path between 2 points, there can be straight, vertical, diagonal, horizontal and curved.
- Lines can imply motion and suggest direction and orientation of objects and sceneary
- A line can also be implied and then filled by the mind when several points are positioned geometrically within a frame

Horizontal - Peace, tranquillity, harmony

Vertical- Strength, power

Diagonal- Change, movement, action

Curved- Quiet, calm, sensual feelings

Artist Research

Walker Evans -

Evans is one of the most influential artists of all time. The way he has captured an image elegantly and makes it look crystal clear, and the articulate publications have inspired future generations of artists. Evans was born in 1903 in St. Louis Missouri and as a child collected picture postcards and even dabbled with painting.

In the photograph above you can see there are 4 people who are in height order which creates a diagonal line of height. In the background we can also see how the boarding are horizontal lines which can suggest the image is showing how the people are the more powerful ones and what stands out.

In the 2 pictures above we see how they were photographed in only black and white film. It shows a bold typography thats been photographed to make a bold statement. The images also resemble American life in the 1930s and I feel represent the types of jobs and events there would have been around that era.

Image Bank

This above collection of photographs by Walker Evans represent some of the images that I felt I could capture within Harlow. They represent a variety of lines including mostly vertical and Horizontal.

My Best Images -

Images that require improvement -

I Have selected these photos as I feel the composition is not right, I feel that in all of them the angle the picture had been shot could be improved especially in the first picture. If I were to retake these images I would possibly use a tripod to keep a steady hand and make sure the images are very abstract and make a bold vertical statement.

With reference to my best images-

  •  I shot the first picture in New look at a Vertical angle really capturing how the the lines on the ornament cross diagonally. However, this caused there to be a reflection which could've been avoided.
  • I then shot the second picture with an implied line to try and emphasise the boxes of lashes so that they are continuous into the background. However the light is reflecting off one of the boxes therefore causing the box to look a bit blurred.
  • I then shot the last picture at another canted angle to represent the continuous line of coloured squares that then lead off into the background. However it would of been better shot with a tripod and a steady hand.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My idea for showing Line through Photography was to capture the urban landscape and geometrical objects within and around Harlow. I was inspired by my research on Walker Evans and how he saw shapes with curved, vertical, horizontal and Diagonal lines and photographed them in a unique way.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I used an iPhone 7 camera which has a six-optic lens, OIS and a wider f/1.8 aperture. I used the normal photo setting on the iPhone and it was an original filter. It would be a lot better to shoot them on an actual camera as I could then adjust the settings to get a sharper or wider look. I tried to find objects where things were stacked up to then get a more defined edge of vertical and horizontal lines.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

The artist research was helpful as it meant that I could show line formation through my own photographs based on the idea of Walker Evan's own Photography. By looking at the way he captured street views I could them resemble this within my own images.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

I believe that I have produced a strong series of images based upon the theory of line and my research on the photographer Walker Evans. The final images I produced have been edited into black and white and the contrast has been looked at more in depth. This therefore means that I can link these images with Walker Evans.

By adjusting the tones and having a more positive brightness and more negative contrast I have the outcome above.

1 comment:

  1. for future shoots restrict the editing screen shots to AO2 with some explanation as to why you have manipulated the images.. Overall good however to gain a B I am looking for you to take time in selecting the final series and adapt them so that the images work together as a series and link more clearly to the artists you have researched. You might also ned to work on the editing process more.. Please discuss with me your choice of images.
