FINAL EVALUATION

Here you will need to summarise how your work has developed as a result of the shoots and research that you have undertaken.

·       How has your research influenced the images that you have created (name some influential artist that inspired you and explain their impact on your work). *****
·       What new technical skills have you developed and how has this impacted on your work
o    technical (learning new techniques in camera operation, shooting, studio lighting, compositional techniques, etc.)
·       Has the way you take photographs changed/improved.
·       In what way have you demonstrated your ability to experiment (computer experiments, physical experiments, etc.)
·       Is your work is developing in a particular direction e.g. abstract, compositional, etc.)

·       In what areas of your work were you most successful in what areas were you the least successful.

My work throughout the hole of Component 1 has improved by the development of my key skills on Photoshop, with Camera settings and writing up my evaluations. When I first started Component 1 my first shoot was on Line. When I first photographed these pictures, I didn't know about exposures, compositions and how to effectively edit my shots to improve the overall photo. However over the course of shoots I have learnt about contrasts, curves, shutter speed, exposure, brightness and many others which have all influenced my outcomes of my Final edits.

When looking at various photographers and portfolios I researched and what they had developed I feel like two that really helped me develop my own shots was the work of Richard Avedon and Walker Evans. Both these photographers had a similar style of converting their images into black and white and having a high contrast. Walker Evans would work with many settings and people in America and explore the culture through these images. One of my favourite pieces he produced  was 'Subway passengers' 1938 which shows expressions of passengers on a subway in everyday life. It shows the classic working man reading a paper and the life of an elderly woman who shows a direct mode of address.

Richard Avedon is a portrait photographer and photographed famous actors, models and people. One of my favourite shots of his was Marilyn Monroe 1957. This was because he captured Marilyn in an off-guard pose with a sad expression on her face. I thought this was really unique and i loved the contrast he again decided to use.

My work Influenced by Richard Avedon and Walker Evans :

In my Opinion I think that my best work has been my Portraiture shoot, my independent shoot from New York and my Landscape shoot. The reason i think this is because my images from these shoots in my view have all been my strongest outcomes. By using the knowledge I have gained from the start like how to adjust my camera settings and the compositional techniques it has meant I have been able to improve my work from when i first started off. One thing that you can see during the progress in my shoots, is how i have learnt and improved to edit my images of Photoshop. By learning how to burn and dodge and how to edit out certain features of the image it has made the final series of images in my portfolios my best work.

However the shoots I feel could have some improvement would be those I didn't enjoy as much like Shape and Movement. The reason for this is because I disliked certain elements in these shoots and struggled more with the outcomes and the edits overall.

COMPOSITE IMAGES

  • Digital compositing is the process of digitally assembling multiple images to make a final image, typically for print.

George Logan -

Born in Bellshill, near Glasgow, Scotland, George studied at Blackpool College of Photography before moving to London where he is currently based. His work is always imaginative, often poignant and not without a healthy dose of humour. George is a muti-faceted talent, equally at home on location or in the studio, working with people, animals, locations or still life.
George is passionate about wildlife conservation and a long-time supporter of The Born Free Foundation, regularly shooting their campaigns. He has traveled extensively around Africa photographing wildlife and documenting big cat rescues.

Image Bank -

Logan's pictures create a sense of surrealism and show a great deal of imagination. When looking at the photos above we see that he has a similar theme in that he choses a regular landscape to capture and then edits in the impossible. I think the most unique one is the flying pigs because he has photographed a pigs natural habitat - a field and then has added in winged pigs. The contrast of colours in the sky also make the image look heavenly suggesting the pigs are interpreted as angels.

Task 1- Getting use to the editing technique:

In this task, I used the resource photos given to us by our teacher and followed a step by step of how to create composite photos. The tools I used in photoshop were, Quick Selection tool, layer mask, copy and paste. Firstly I used the quick selection tool to copy the duck and then once happy with the outline I pasted this to the picture of the New York harbour. Once this was done I copied the layer of the duck 2 more times and changed the sizing and position of each duck.

My final image is:

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My idea for Composite Image Making was to edit photographs where objects are seen in an abnormal setting or a place that doesn't fit the picture. this included animals, shadows, vehicles and statues. My idea was formed around my research of George Logan, who's use wild animals in public places which gave me the idea of placing the dog on a New York city street walk and the flamingos in a field. The flamingos, statue and shadows were all taken on a iPhone which caused a slightly different quality of image. My favourite is the statue of liberty photo as I like they way I created a stronger vibrance and saturation.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

The tools I used in photoshop were, Quick Selection tool, layer mask, copy, paste and also various features like burning, dodging, adjusting the brightness and vibrance. Firstly I used the quick selection tool to copy the object I wanted to take out. I then selected Layer Mask which deleted the chosen area and  and after copying and pasting my image to the selected background started to blur in the animals to make them look like they were actually in the street, with my brush at 100% opacity. On the picture with the statues I used burning with curves to make the statues darker and make them stand out.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

The artist research was helpful as I begun to see how I could develop and produce my own version of Composite images. I really liked George Logan's surrealism approach and how it makes the photo look so realistic even though the situation wasn't. Even though my final images weren't as clear and didn't sync together perfectly, I believe they show a similar style of George Logan's work within them and how I've recreated that.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of composite images and George Logan as an artist.
