INDEPENDANT SHOOT - PHOTO GENRES

I am going to do a photo shoot on Friday 25th for Portraiture. I am going to use a model and try and look at the style of David Lachapelle. I will try and use a clear background so if i wanted to edit it is easier too.

Artist Research:

George Logan -

Born in Bellshill, near Glasgow, Scotland, George studied at Blackpool College of Photography before moving to London where he is currently based. His work is always imaginative, often poignant and not without a healthy dose of humour. George is a muti-faceted talent, equally at home on location or in the studio, working with people, animals, locations or still life.

George is passionate about wildlife conservation and a long-time supporter of The Born Free Foundation, regularly shooting their campaigns. He has traveled extensively around Africa photographing wildlife and documenting big cat rescues.

Logan's pictures create a sense of surrealism and show a great deal of imagination. When looking at the photos above we see that he has a similar theme in that he choses a regular landscape to capture and then edits in the impossible. I think the most unique one is the flying pigs because he has photographed a pigs natural habitat - a field and then has added in winged pigs. The contrast of colours in the sky also make the image look heavenly suggesting the pigs are interpreted as angels.

Task 1- Getting use to the editing technique:

In this task, I used the resource photos given to us by our teacher and followed a step by step of how to create composite photos. The tools I used in photoshop were, Quick Selection tool, layer mask, copy and paste. Firstly I used the quick selection tool to copy the duck and then once happy with the outline I pasted this to the picture of the New York harbour. Once this was done I copied the layer of the duck 2 more times and changed the sizing and position of each duck.

    My idea for Composite Image Making was to edit photographs where objects are seen in an abnormal setting or a place that doesn't fit the picture. this included animals, shadows, vehicles and statues. My idea was formed around my research of George Logan, who's use wild animals in public places which gave me the idea of placing the dog on a New York city street walk and the flamingos in a field. The flamingos, statue and shadows were all taken on a iPhone which caused a slightly different quality of image. My favourite is the statue of liberty photo as I like they way I created a stronger vibrance and saturation.

The tools I used in photoshop were, Quick Selection tool, layer mask, copy, paste and also various features like burning, dodging, adjusting the brightness and vibrance. Firstly I used the quick selection tool to copy the object I wanted to take out. I then selected Layer Mask which deleted the chosen area and  and after copying and pasting my image to the selected background started to blur in the animals to make them look like they were actually in the street, with my brush at 100% opacity. On the picture with the statues I used burning with curves to make the statues darker and make them stand out.

The artist research was helpful as I begun to see how I could develop and produce my own version of Composite images. I really liked George Logan's surrealism approach and how it makes the photo look so realistic even though the situation wasn't. Even though my final images weren't as clear and didn't sync together perfectly, I believe they show a similar style of George Logan's work within them and how I've recreated that.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of composite images and George Logan as an artist. 

DOCUMENTRY

Documentary

Documentary photography usually refers to a popular form of photography used to chronicle both significant and relevant to history and historical events and everyday life. It is typically covered in professional photojournalism, or real life reportage, but it may also be an amateur, artistic, or academic pursuit.

Henri Cartier Bresson

The photo above is described as the "decisive moment". The decisive moment is a concept made popular by the street photographer, photojournalist, and Magnum co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson. The decisive moment refers to capturing an event that is ephemeral and spontaneous, where the image represents the essence of the event itself.

Tina Barney 
Tina Barney was born in 1945 in New York.  Since 1975, she has been producing large-scale photographs of family and friends.  Her meticulous tableaux chronicle the complexity of interpersonal relationships.  These lush color prints have been exhibited and collected by major institutions around the world.  Among her exhibitions are a mid-career exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1991 and the Whitney Biennial, 1987. More recently, her work has been shown at the New York State Theatre in New York, in 2011;  The Barbican Art Centre, London;  Museum Folkwang in Essen, Museum der Art Moderne, Salzburg, and others.  In October, her work will be included in a major portraiture exhibition at The National Gallery, London.   Barney was the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1991, and  the 2010 Lucie Award for Achievement in Portraiture.  Her monographs include Tina Barney:  Theatre of Manners, The Europeans, and her new book from Steidl, Players. She lives in New York and Rhode Island

 AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

    My idea for Documentary was to capture 2 days over the Christmas period and record each individual day with photos. I first recorded Christmas day and the family celebrations and traditions like: carving the meat, opening presents, pulling crackers and admiring the decorations. I really like the photo of the bauble decoration as the image has really focused on that specific ornament and it has real emphasis on the detail. For my second shoot I chose Boxing Day and captured London and my journey. One of my favourite images for that day would be the photographs from the tube, I liked the expressions shown 
and the empty carriage really added effect.

In these shoots, I used my camera in manual mode so i was able to adjust the aperture and shutter speed due to the different lighting's during the day. This meant that my images were not out of focus and you were able to see them clearly.  I then edited my photos in photoshop adjusting the exposure, burning and dodging.

After researching Documentary Photography and looking at the work of Tina barney I tried to interpret my own shoot by looking at 2 days in my life around the Christmas period and taking my own photos to try and create a sense of a story through photography. I personally prefer my images from Shoot 2 where you can see I am on a day out in London.

I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of composite images and George Logan as an artist.
