Independent shoot 1- 

Influential Artist Research - 

Robert Frank is a Swiss-American photographer and documentary filmmaker. His most notable work, the 1958 book titled The Americans, earned Frank comparisons to a modern-day de Tocqueville for his fresh and nuanced outsider's view of American society

He turned to photography, in part as a means to escape the confines of his business-oriented family and home, and trained under a few photographers and graphic designers before he created his first hand-made book of photographs, 40 Fotos, in 1946. Frank emigrated to the United States in 1947, and secured a job in New York City as a fashion photographer for harpers bazar. 


Walker Evans is one of the most influential artists of all time. The way he has captured an image elegantly and makes it look crystal clear, and the articulate publications have inspired future generations of artists. Evans was born in 1903 in St. Louis Missouri and as a child collected picture postcards and even dabbled with painting

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My idea for this shoot was to look at American culture and capture colour and tone within the buildings and surroundings. By observing each picture from a different perspective I tried to capture the typical American culture in my own light. With reference to my best images I feel like these outcomes were the best because of the natural simplicity of them.

AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I used a Canon DSLR and used the manual setting do I was able to adjust the shutter speed and exposure for each setting. I then worked on making the colours look vibrant and saturated. 

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

The artist research was helpful as It meant I could develop my work further based on looking at the photographer Robert Frank. It showed me that I could capture pictures of buildings from a low shot and a wide shot and vary the colours that I chose to include. 

(It is important that you show a progression of your work… which may mean revisiting a subject area and adding additional images showing a development of your ideas or refinement of the final images through).

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.  

(At the end of the entry you will discuss whether you have produced a personal and meaningful response, this means  (are my images creative/relevant to the subject area studied/connected and influenced by any research undertaken). 

I believe that I was able to produce a strong series of photos based on how I managed to capture the typical American suburban and city life through a variety of different perspectives some including warmer tones and others using negative space.

Shape 

Definitions - 

Shape-  A shape is an area enclosed by a line. It could be just an outline or it could be shaded in. Shapes can be either geometric, like a circle, square or triangle, or irregular. When drawing shapes, you must consider the size and position as well as the shape of the area around it. The shapes created in the spaces between shapes are referred to as negative space.

Geometric -A geometric pattern or arrangement is made up of shapes such as squares, triangles or rectangles. 

Irregular - not even or balanced in shape or arrangement.

Negative space - Negative space is, quite simply, the space that surrounds an object in a image. Just as important as that object itself, negative space helps to define the boundaries of positive space and brings balance to a composition.

Artist research William Eggleston -

William Eggleston (born July 27, 1939) is an American Photographer. He is widely credited with increasing recognition for colour photography as a legitimate artistic medium to display in art galleries. As a boy, Eggleston was introverted; he enjoyed playing the piano, drawing, and working with electronics. From an early age, he was also drawn to visual media, and reportedly enjoyed buying postcards and cutting out pictures from magazines.

He has photographed a series of images based on the female form.

Comment on how Brandt has used negative space to create this intriguing composition

I personally believe that the image photographed has tried to portray a woman as an object. By using negative space and

I wasn't happy enough with the images I produced for shape so I then decided to do another shoot and take some more photos.

Images that need improving -

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My idea for recording shape was to photograph objects within my home and outside around the area I live and look for block objects. I was inspired by William Eggleston and how he also explored the colour in a shape as well as just the negative space. His use of using everyday objects gave me the inspiration to shoot these images as I found objects that are also part of my everyday use. One of my favourite images would be the duck figurines as it displays a good outline and I explored the use of negative space.

With reference to the Best selected images...

The Image of the Pumpkins I thought really represented shape as it shows how the use of a background and negative space can clearly show the curves of an identical shape.

       

       The image of the flower also showed how shape can influence a picture by the geometric style of the flowers petals, however if i had improved the lighting I feel as if this could've been improved.

I used a Fuji finepix for these photos and for the majority of them used the flash to show the object in a better light, creating shadows of negative space. I then went on to edit my images in photoshop using curves, contrast and vibrance to really make each object stand out and reflect from the negative space.

The artist research was helpful as I realised that by using the other formal element of colour it separated the idea between positive and negative space, this meant that a shape can be easily seen and it creates a nice range of images. 

(It is important that you show a progression of your work… which may mean revisiting a subject area and adding additional images showing a development of your ideas or refinement of the final images through).

I believe that the pictures I have produced I did struggle with and found the concept of shape slightly more difficult compared to the other formal elements, however I plan to take another series of photos and try and produce a better outcome.
