INDEPENDENT SHOOT 2

Independent shoot 2

Influential Artist research -

Richard Avedon was an American fashion and portrait photographer. An obituary published in The New York Times said that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century n 1944, Avedon began working as an advertising photographer for a department store, but was quickly endorsed by Alexey Brodovitch, who was art director for the fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar. Lillian Bassman also promoted Avedon's career at Harper's. In 1945 his photographs began appearing in Junior Bazaar and, a year later, in Harper's Bazaar.
I        In 1946, Avedon had set up his own studio and began providing images for magazines including vogue and life. He soon became the chief photographer for Harper's Bazaar.

Editing -

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My idea for this shoot was to capture models expressions through portriature. In my best images I feel as if I have managed to capture the model in their best light and with some editing can make this photo have a strong potential. I explored how faces and people can differentiate  through makeup and a natural face. however I feel there were some errors with lighting that could be improved upon.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I used a Canon DSLR and used the manual setting so I was able to adjust the exposure for each lighting. I also used a plain white sheet as a backdrop to focus on the individual person  rather than having distractions in the background.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

(Here you will discuss how you developed your work based on your research of e.g. artists/photographers, etc).

The artist research was helpful as It meant I could develop my work further based on looking at the photographer Richard Avedon. It showed me how I could capture people in a picturesque way and explore tones with face pigmentation and bone structure.

(It is important that you show a progression of your work… which may mean revisiting a subject area and adding additional images showing a development of your ideas or refinement of the final images through).

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

(At the end of the entry you will discuss whether you have produced a personal and meaningful response, this means  (are my images creative/relevant to the subject area studied/connected and influenced by any research undertaken).

I believe that I was able to produce a strong series of images based on my research and photographic intelligence. By experimenting with backdrops and lighting and then using editing tools like the heal brush I was able to improve my pictures to a higher quality.

MOVEMENT

Movement

Motion - blur is the apparent streaking of rapidly moving objects in a still image or a sequence of images such as a movie or animation. It results when the image being recorded changes during the recording of a single exposure, either due to rapid movement or long exposure.
Freeze Frame - is a single frame forming a motionless image from a film or videotape
Movement - is an act of movement
Panning - Swing (a video or film camera) in a horizontal or vertical plane, typically to give a panoramic effect or follow a subject

Have the camera in manual or shutter priority mode !!

Artist Research -

Ernst Haas (March 2, 1921 – September 12, 1986) was an Austrian-American photojournalist and colour photographer. During his 40-year career, Haas bridged the gap between photojournalism and the use of photography as a medium for expression and creativity. In addition to his coverage of events around the globe after World War 2, Haas was an early innovator in color photography. His images were disseminated by magazines like Life and Vogue and, in 1962, were the subject of the first single-artist exhibition of color photography at New York’s Museum of modern art. He served as president of the cooperative Magnum photos, and his book The Creation (1971) was one of the most successful photography books ever, selling 350,000 copies.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My idea for recording Movement was to capture the idea of light within movement. By looking at the work of Ernst haas and using his inspiration of moving objects within an image I then tried to capture the movement of a torch and develop certain shapes. By working with light I did have a few outcomes to start off with that i wasn't happy with but I finally worked out the right aperture and shutter speed to make the photos work for me and record movement in the way I wanted.

With reference to the Best selected images...

One of my favourite images is the heart shape and star shape as it shows how one singular movement over time can transform into a shape.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I used a Canon DSLR for this with a shutter speed 25'' and an aperture of around f9.0, however this varied depending on the position of the light from the torch. By having the camera on continuous shooting it meant I was able to capture these pictures. I then would repeat the shape of a heart or example over and over again and by the shutter speed being a longer time of 25 secs it would capture every singular movement of the light source and that would create the outlines.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

(Here you will discuss how you developed your work based on your research of e.g. artists/photographers, etc).

The artist research was helpful as I realised that movement  could be captured by light photography and this meant i was able to create the process of movement by capturing the movement of light through time. By recording moving objects and capturing this I am now developing a strong series of images.

I believe the images I have produced show the strong series of how I can develop my movement in photography through other formal elements and I intend to improve upon this in the future.

PORTFOLIO FORMAL ELEMENTS

Portfolio Formal Elements

Portfolio - An artist's portfolio is an edited collection of their best artwork intended to showcase an artist's style or method of work. A portfolio is used by artists to show employers their versatility by showing different samples of current work.

In my opinion a successful portfolio would be one that includes a series of images that are linked to a theme e.g - Landscapes. That identify your best work and best images you have produced through a series of your work. These could also be edited in a similar style e.g black and white. These must be presented in a neat and formal style that looks appealing to the eye.

Aesthetic - concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty. A set of principles underlying the work of a particular artist or artistic movement.

My Portfolio

  • Cityscape
  • Tone
  • Form
  • Line

What makes a good portfolio?
  • Consistent style.
  • Aesthetics - pleasing to the eye
  • Linked to the theme.
  • Similar edit treatment.
  • Limit the formal elements to 2-3 max.
  • Presentation.
  • Select and showcase best images.
